Celebrating Pride #WhereIowaStarted
What sparked your interest in founding Key City Pride?
“Our interest came when we saw a lack of LGBTQ representation in the Dubuque community that was similar to what we are used to. Coming from a bigger city (Chicago), I was used to Pride being celebrated on a larger scale, and since I now call Dubuque home, I wanted to create something that reflected that experience and really give our local LGBTQ community the Pride organization it deserves and needs.”
What are you most excited for?
“I am most excited to see so many people from around the Midwest Tristate area coming together IN PERSON and celebrate Pride. After a year of being locked in our homes, its important that we unify and show love and support for each other and all of our varying identities. “
What will make Dubuque’s Pride events different from other communities?
“Well for one, we are blessed to bring 3 amazing performers from the hit show “RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars” into our community. This will be the first time a performer list of this magnitude has come to Dubuque to celebrate Pride with us. I am also very excited and pleased to offer to the community a variety of events for an entire week for everyone to enjoy. From Bingo, to Cruises, to Family Game Night, there is literally something for everyone. “
If someone has never attended a pride event but wants to, what’s would you tell them?
Be ready for bright colors, loud music, and fun all around. This inclusive community is ready to have fun and celebrate! If attending any of the shows, be sure to bring tip money for the performers because as a famous Drag Queen said, “It takes a lot of money to look this cheap”. Also come with an open mind and heart! The LGBTQ community has endured some very challenging times and this is our time to celebrate being who we are. Expect to see various styles of art forms and expressions in a safe space.
