April showers may bring May flowers but they also require indoor activities. Luckily Dubuque has a multitude of possibilities to bring some sunshine to those cloudy wet April days.

9 A.M

Start the day with a stop at one of Dubuque’s many coffee shops for a breakfast that will give you the energy to enjoy the many activities available.  Check out these warm and cozy coffee shops full of charm and caffeine.

10 A.M.

No visit to Dubuque is complete without touring the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium at the Ice Harbor.  Learn about the mighty Mississippi and its impact on not only the history of Dubuque but the entire country, as its watershed covers 40% of the lower 48 states and is the fourth largest in the world.

Add a trip to the Ham House Museum and discover the history of one of Dubuque’s earliest settlers. Included at the Ham House is the oldest log cabin in Iowa, a replica of a lead mine, and a one-room school that once provided education for hundreds of children.

2 P.M.

After lunch, explore the Dubuque Museum of Art’s April showcase, Shiny, Sticky, Smooth, a pop art extravaganza of advertising and mass media originating from the consumer culture that followed the austerity of the Depression and World War II.  First Fridays at the Museum provides a preview of the Julien Dubuque International Film Festival accompanied by appetizers and a cash bar.  On Sunday, April 30 listen to Dr. Elaine Burns, professor of piano at UW-Platteville, as she plays music inspired by the Pop Art Period. These pieces will include readings from John F. Kennedy, Andy Warhol, Rachel Carson and others.

6 P.M.

Refuel for a night out at one of the many delectable local restaurants in Dubuque. Have a farm-to-table meal at Brazen, woodfired pizza at L.May Eatery or a juicy burger at Barrel House.

7 P.M.

Stop by Diamond Jo or Q Casino for an evening of gambling and an array of musical entertainment. The Mississippi Moon Bar at Diamond Jo will be featuring Mickey Gilley’s country singing talents on April 15 and Mindie Adams who brings her psychic abilities on April 13. Q Casino has Phil Vasser, Saving Abel, and Brett Young this Month as well.

Head out the Five Flags Center for the Voices of Angels tour of Celtic Woman on April 29 or Magic Men Live of April 26.
