Dubuque, Lent, and a Fish Fry have a long history.

Even if it is not Lent or you are not Catholic, the fish fry is an institution among Dubuquers.  Locals and visitors alike have discovered some delicious alternatives to the traditional hamburger or steak dinner.

The longest running Fish Fry in Dubuque is offered by the Knights of Columbus.  Every Friday during Lent, beginning March 3, 2017, from 5 pm to 7:30 p.m. the Knights cook up a delicious meal of baked or fried cod. Add to the main entrée a salad bar, American fries, baked potato, rolls, grilled cheese sandwiches, coffee, milk and dessert and you have a tasty evening in the historic Knights of Columbus Hall.

Right along the Mississippi River, Catfish Charlie’s showcases fresh fish flown in every Friday.  The casual atmosphere includes a deck overlooking the river if the spring weather cooperates.  Each Friday and Saturday night from 4 pm to 10 p.m. enjoy their all you can eat catfish with French fries and coleslaw.  You might even want to add alligator nuggets to your meal to add a bit of adventure to your meal!

Every Friday the Morocco Supper Club, a family owned and operated restaurant for more than 40 years, features cod, baked potatoes, and salad.  A plethora of other seafood entrees abound. Try their catfish, shrimp, lobster, crab legs, walleye pike, scallops, salmon, or shrimp scampi with garlic butter.  Frog legs are also available to enhance the menu choices.

Located a few miles outside Dubuque, The Barn in Sherrill comes with rave reviews. Each Friday – all year – the Barn has an all you can eat fish fry. During Lent, the meal is offered buffet style.  Their specialty jumbo shrimp battered, grilled or broiled will tempt each appetite.  During Lent 3,000 shrimp can be sold in a single night!

On Main Street in the historic Hotel Julien, Caroline’s seafood menu will delight diners. Try the fish and chips with hush puppies and coleslaw or the seared yellow tuna with mango avocado salsa.

In Balltown, Breitbach’s Fine Country Dining superior Friday night buffet consisting of beer battered cod, baked cod, whole catfish, shrimp Alfredo, popcorn shrimp, crab legs, potato wedges, mashed potatoes, gravy, corn, rolls, soup and a complete salad bar I sure to please.  This all you can eat meal guarantees no one will go home hungry.
