The Dubuque area is known for its rolling hills, sprawling grassland prairies, and soaring limestone bluffs. But did you know that it’s also part of the biggest wine region in the U.S. known as the Upper Mississippi River Valley American Viticulture Area (AVA)?
So we’d like to raise our glasses to Dubuque-area wineries, and invite you to do the same!
PromiseLand Winery is nestled between the towering limestone bluffs and low-lying banks of the Mississippi River in Guttenberg, Iowa, just a 40 mile drive north of Dubuque along the scenic Great River Road. PromiseLand grows Lacrosse, Marechal Foch, and St. Croix Iowa grapes, as well as Niagara and Catawba grapes. They produce a variety of sweet wines but also offer a dry red wine for those with heartier palates. The winery grounds has a spacious tasting room, event space, and five boutique shops for everything you need!
Off Highway 52 in Bankston, Iowa, you’ll discover the picturesque 11 acre estate of Park Farm Winery. This chateau retreat surrounded by vineyards, pastures, and woodlands will transport you to the French countryside without ever having to leave Iowa. Park Farm has grown into a year-round destination and features award-winning Midwest/French-hybrid varietal wines.
Inside the historic Star Brewery Building in the Port of Dubuque is the Stone Cliff Winery tasting room, production area, and gift shop. Stone Cliff offers a range of wines with their own signature twists as well as unique berry blends like Late Harvest Spiced Apple Wine made with local apples from Czipars Orchard in Dubuque and Sweet Cherry Wine made from Wisconsin Door County cherries. With lunchtime specials, historic architecture, an outdoor seating area, live entertainment, tours, and more; just one visit to Stone Cliff will uncork an entire day of fun!
Crimson Sunset Vineyards, Winery & Cidery is located at 24765 Highway 151 in Cascade, just a 30 minute drive southwest of Dubuque. Crimson Sunset is the only winery in the state of Iowa with certified organic vineyards. Sustainable-minded owners, Kevin and Lisa Miller, produce their wines in a 100% solar and wind powered facility. They follow a natural wine-making process with minimal intervention and no added water or cane sugar. White and blush wines are sweetened with the Miller’s own pure grape juice to bring the flavorful impact of their grapes into every glass of their delicious wine.
A little further south near the town of Baldwin, is Iowa’s first estate winery. Tabor Home Vineyards & Winery established its estate vineyards in 1989 and began its winery production in 1996. The tasting room is always open and has several varieties of red, white, sparkling, and dessert wines sure to please any palate. The grounds of this beautiful countryside estate are most lovely from May through September.
